Welcome to the Playstation 2 guide. Have you ever wondered what that number is behind your PS2 is? Have you wonder why some PS2 have 8 compared to 10 screws? The guide can also be used to find your version. And it is especially valuable to those interested in expanding their PS2 capabilities.

There are currently 14 U.S. models of PS2s. And you might think buying any would perform what you need, but certain version models of the PS2 have many problems. This guide is for buyers to ask the seller what version their PS2 is, so they know what they are getting in to.

- Version 1, 2, and 3-

They beginning models of the PS2 have 10 screws on the bottom, covered by black rubber tabs. The model number can be

Version 1/2/3: SCPH-30000, SCPH-30001, SCPH-30002, SCPH-30003, SCPH-30004.

-Verion 4, 5, and 6-

These versions will have 8 screws. Version 4 however will also have an electrical hazard warning on the bottom of the case.

Version 4: The model # can be SCPH-30000, SCPH-30001, 35001, SCPH-30002, 35002, SCPH-30003, 35003, SCPH-30004, 35004

Version 5/6: SCPH-30000R, SCPH-30001 R, SCPH-30002 R, SCPH-30003 R, SCPH-30004 R, SCPH-30006 R

-Version 8-

Only released in Japan.

-Version 9-

If your model # is SCPH-50000, 50001, 50010, 50002, 50003 or 50004

-Version 10-

Version 10: SCPH-50001

-Version 11-

Only released in Europe

-Version 12-

Now the rest of the versions will be the new slim models.

Version 12: SCPH-70012 CB

Version 13:

SCPH-70001 (for North America)
The Warranty Sticker location has moved from the back and is now intentionally located directly over one of the (6) screws on the v13 underside.

Another major change includes the removal of the Phone Line from the back of the v13 console, however, the Network Line is still present for on-line gaming fortunately.

-Version 14-

This is the last version of the PS2.

SCPH-75001 (for North America)
The motherboard is a bit different from last SCPH-70011/70012/70001 versions.

Alright, now what? First of all, if buying parts for the PS2, you must correspond it with the right versions. For example, PS2 bodies and parts will only fit specific PS2s.

Internally, version 1-6 is poor. The guide suggest not buying a v1-6 on ebay or anywhere because the laser is expected to die out.

Please note model SCPH70002, 70003 and 70004 were recalled due to an over heating problem.

Version 4: SCPH-30001 , is known for having disc read problems, do not buy version 4.

Model #'s  SCPH-75000 SCPH-70000 and other new PS2 revisions will have conflict with older games. Conflict includes freezing the game, taking extra long to save, sound and movie play problems.
