 PLAYSTATION 2

Free Playstation 2 Repair Guide. All the steps needed to repair your own system and save some money toward a game. If you find this guide Useful, just click "Yes"!

OK, first things, first. ***Once you remove the Factory 'Void' Sticker on the bottom or side of your Playstation, it is no longer under Warranty nor is Sony responsible for any repairs no matter if it's brand new or old. Please take this into consideration before breaking the Factory Seal. I recommend this Guide being used to take care of your system but I am not responsible for your system, etc. This guide should be performed by an Adult and caution be taken while the cover is off and the unit is plugged in.

I have worked on Sony Playstations for many years and have seen just about everything go wrong with them. From drinks being spilled on them to the Disk Tray being completely gone, to Disk Read Errors. This guide is very easy and will save you from having to pay a lot of money for someone else to repair it. Just follow the steps below and your syatem will function as if you have just taken it out of the Factory Box!

OK,  If you can answer yes to any of the following statements about your Playstation 2 then you need to perform these simple steps provided here to fix the problems...

1.) Have you ever loaded a Game up and it flashes a 'Disk Read Error on the screen?

2.) Have you been playing for hours and then all of a sudden, your game restarts and freezes up during game play?

3.) Does the cooling fan in the back seem to blow out warm air all the time or does the top or bottom of the system get warm/hot to the touch?

4.) Have you noticed that some games just will not play at all, or games you have played before will not load?

And last but not least......Have you inserted a game before and it go directly to the memory card/game load screen and just sit there?

If you answered Yes to any of the above questions, then your system needs some care.

Here is a list of thing you will need to complete the servicing of your Playstation 2 Game Console:

A) Small Phillips Head Screwdriver

B) Small, thin Flat Tip Screwdriver

C) 8 Cotton Q-tips

D) 1 Bottle of Rubbing Alcohol

E) 1 Can Compressed Air

F.) 1  Fine Point Black Permanent Marker

G) 1 Small Dry Paintbrush

H) 1 Small Tube of White Lithium Grease or Similar Grease

Ok, start by making sure the system is unplugged and all controlers and memory cards are not connected. Turn the system Up-Side-Down and carefulle remove the rubber grippers from the Screw Holes and place in a safe place.

Next, carefully un-screw each screw from the bottom of the system and place them in a secure location.

Now, VERY, VERY carefully, grab the system with both hands making sure it does not come apart and flip it back over to its regular position.

***Most 1st issue Playstation 2's were manufactured with a very small, fragile, data strip that is taped down just beneath the top lid/cover. You must be very cautious when removing the cover as any damage to the data strip may cause unrepairable damage to the system. So, not to scare you or anything but, just be careful***

Ok with that said......lift the top cover up very slowly until you can just barely see underneath it. If your unit has the data strip, untape it if taped down and continue to remove cover. This strip is not very long so you will need to position the lid/cover so that no tension is placed in this strip. Once you have safely opened it and placed it safely to one side, you are now ready to begin repairing your system.

Ok, Next....Use your Compressed Air to blow any and all visible dust/debris from inside cover and system its self. Pay close attention to the Power Buttons and Reset Button and be sure to get all the dust and debris out of it as possible. You can now use your small Paintbrush to help you remove the dust and debris if needed. Just be as gentle as possible.

Now, Make sure that you are not touching anything inside the system and plug it up to a wall outlet. Once plugged up, Open the Disk Tray to the Open Position and then once again unplug the system from the outlet. Now, the Disk Tray should be open.

You should now be able to see the Laser and everything that surrounds it. You should see the Fan as well. If you have had your system forever, you are more than likely seeing lots of DUST and DEBRIS and are prob. wondering how it all got in there. Just stay CALM.

****DO NOT use the Small Brush on the Laser. This should not be touched at this time at ALL***

Ok, take your Small Paintbrush and begin cleaning the Fan Blades making sure to remove all the dust and debris from it and the mesh cover for it as well. Next, continue using your brush to remove dust from everything you see (Not the Laser) Now, grab the Compressed Air and give everything a few good blows paying special attention to the Fan and surrounding areas including the area around the Laser.

Ok you are doing GREAT. .Now, Grab the bottle of Rubbing Alcohol and 2 Q-Tips. Dip one end of the Q-tip in the alcohol and squeeze out the excess. Next, clean the Laser Eyr with a soft, circle motion using the Q-tip. Now flip the Q-tp to the other end and do it again. Next, take a Q-tip and use a circle motion to soak up and dry the Laser Eye. It should Now be CLEAN.

GOOD JOB!

Wow, ok....I want you to look right around the Laser area and you should see a White Gear about the size of a dime or nickle. This is you Height Adjustment for the Laser Eye. This White Gear controls how close the Laser Eye is to the Game in order to properly Read the Games/Data. Over time, with wear and other factors, the Laser tends to act up and needs to be readjusted. So, take a break for a minute or five and get ready to perform the most important part of the entire repair guide.

....ok...here we go....

In order to asjust the Laser Eye so that it will once again be in Top Working order, we first need to mark its current position with the Black Perm Marker. Just pick a location on the White Gear (Top One) and place a mark on the outer edge and another mark on the outer edge of the plastic next to it. Ok, you should now have a point to go back to if we need to....This is called the "Factory Set Mark"!

***Now, draw a very small line with an arrow on it going COUNTER CLOCK WISE on the White Gear. In order to move the Laser Eye up, closer to the Game, you have to move it Counter Clock Wise.

Once you do this, take the Small, Flat Tip Screwdriver and very gently turn the White Gear, Counter Clockwise. It should be a very faint clicking sound for each movement or you will be able to feel each knotch/time you move it. You want to turn it as close to a HALF a turn as you can. Your Starting/Factory line should be on the other side of the other line once you finish moving it. ***

***Try not to turn the White Gear no more than Half a turn***

AWESOME JOB......Almost done.....

Ok,Ok......Now, get the White Lithium Greaseor similar grease and place a very small amount on the Disk Tray Tracks if needed. Make sure that you do not put very much because it may get on the Laser and that would be BAD. If you can see Grease on it, just use it by moving it to where its needed. If not, be very sparing as to how much you use on the tracks.

Next, plug the system back in and be sure the Disk Tray closes and opens ok and that everything powers up properly and that all lights is on the system.

Once you confrim everything, unplug the system and VERY Carefully place the Lid?Cover back on the system and tape the data strip back down. Now, carefully turn the system over and replace the screws and rubber grippers.

TRY IT OUT....place a game in it and see if it freezes now. If for some reason the steps provided here do not help solve your system problem, go back inside of it and continue to adjust the White Gear. I DO NOT RECOMMEND turning the Gear more that 1 and a Half turns because the tray could hit it and damage it. And you would be crying the Blues then. And let me tell you, Life is not the same without Playstation!

Clean up by Spraying the outside of the unit and around the controler slots and memory card slots inside and out. Also spray the AV hook-ups and the cord end of controler. You should Spray the Playstation out with Compressed Air at least once every 2 months. This will keep the System working great and preserve it for future Playstation Generations.

Well, if you have any questions about this Guide contact me and I will be happy to assist you to the best of my ability. Take Care and HAPPY GAMING.........God-Bless!
