Since many members are writing guides for both PS3 and Xbox360 recently. I will assume that you've known a lot about the specs about Playstation3 already, so I'm not going to write another similar guide like other members here. But I do want to point out something about the goods and bads about both systems.
Choosing a system that is right for you is difficult, believe it or not. In the year end, there will be a major battle between these two Next-Gens.
Here I'm providing you a short and simple list of the goods and bads about PS3 and Xbox360:
Xbox360
Goods: In compare to PS3, it is much cheapter, even the premium edition.
Uses regular DVD drive rather than HD-DVD drive, cheap and popular.
Supports multiple languages, allowing users to select their own language when setting up the system.
Fantastic online gameplay, no problem. We'd like to pay for it!
Decently gameplay and much improved graphics.
Bads: Bugs, "kills" the game during the middle of the game. (while playing Project Gathem Racing 3, screen dead)
Console gets hot much quicker in hot rooms, so keep your room temperature down, or your Xbox360 "dies" (happend to my friend once)
PlayStation3
Goods: Loads faster than Xbox360, just a little bit.
Free online game play.
Blu-ray (the good aspects) technology!!! I've never seen before! It stores more gigs than any DVD-R, even HD-DVD
Supports up to 7 controllers at once, while Xbox360 supports 4.
Looks more "sexier" with "oiled" or "tanned" bodies.
It's hard drive holds more gigs than Xbox360
It can play HD-DVD movies and will expand the popularity of HD-DVDs
Bads: Way too expensive, $600? No way. This will shift buyers demand for more Xbox360, Sony will lose the war!
Blu-ray (the dark side)? It only stores more data, and that's it. No games would use up to 30 GB. This only cost me extra money.
So now I hope this little guide will help you making decisions on the two game systems. I personally love them all, but disregard their prices. Assume you are a owner of the Xbox360 now, and doesn't want it anymore in the future, you can always sell it in order to get the PS3. If I were you, I'd own both of them. According to supermediastore.com, a single Blu-ray drive will cost about $1000. No wounder PS3 developers think their Playstation3s are cheap. However, in order to compete with Xbox360 and stand high in the market, Sony drops the price of PS3, and increases prices on some other Sony brands to gain a profit.
So, will you try out the PS3 in the winter?
