Pirates of the Spanish Main was developed by WizKids Games as one of a new type of collectible card games. The main dofference is that the cards in both starter sets and booster packs, come in small groups of one to three cards which contain the parts needed to actually build small minatures for playing the game on most table tops. Pirates only requires a three foot by three foot space to play and is mainly designed for play by two people. To start, two friends can play a complete starter game with as little equipment as one booster pack. All packs contain a rules set, ships, crew and treasure, one 5mm die, and an island card. One person may build a 'fleet' for a standard game with as few as three packs.

Game play of Pirates has become very popular in many gaming stores in both match and tournament formats. WizKids supports this with free 'prize support' for the people who play in their 'approved' tournaments. Most tournaments have no entry fee and are open to any who wish to play. Check with your local gaming shop for tournament locations near you if you are interested.

The pirates game itself is 'loosely' historical. The general periods of pirate activity are represented by different sets of pirate ships that are available. Pirates of the Spanish Main, Barbary Coast, Crimson Coast, Revolution, and South China Seas. There is at least one more set yet to be released also. Unlike some collectible games, Pirates cards are never 'retired', although some play venues do have 'house rules' restricting some types of cards. All of the comlpexities of sailng a 'tallship' have been solved with a very straight forward play system that requires no special equipment. You can play with as little as one 6 sided die. Measurement for movement of your ships is done using the side of one of the cards out of your boosters. Most games last around 30 minutes. As soon as one player or the other has sunk the opposing fleet, or has half of the gold, they win!

The popularity of Pirates has been steady for over a year and the first set has been reissued for a second printing. Once you start your fleet, you can easily fill in your missing ships and crew from the active trading here.

Please come and look at our Pirates cards that we have available in our store, Cyndi's Cards, Games, & Collectibles.
