I was the victim of purchasing TWO fake Ping Rapture Drivers on eBay (although the sellers immediately refunded me and assured me that they had likewise been duped by their suppliers. Based on their previous feedback, I tended to believe them). Since I was 0-2, I thought I would share what to look for and what I was told by a Ping rep.
1. First off, the Rapture Driver has a very distinctive crown. It has a "composite" look (checkered) and a visible web insert in the back of the crown that is truly unique. If you do not see this web, it is not authentic. See Ping's official website to see what the crown should look like.
The first driver I received did not have the "composite" look OR the visible web insert. It was very obviously not authentic.
However, the Second Rapture did have the "composite" look AND the visible web insert . . . it looked very authentic! In fact, and even though it was a fake, it felt and played like the real thing (I had used the demo in the pro-shop multiple times so I knew what it was supposed to feel like and how the ball should travel). I discovered it was a fake after about 3 rounds when the small Ping "medallion" poped off the back of the crown and I returned it to Ping for repair or replacement and they confirmed that it was a fake.
2. Make sure you look at the picture of the shaft that is with the auction (or request one if there is not). The first one I bought had a shaft that looked like the standard one that comes with the Rapture, except, after I received it, I noticed that it had a different "model number". For instance, the factory shaft from Ping is a 909d or 100d. See Ping's official website to see what the shafts should look like and what the correct model numbers should be.
The first Rapture I received had a number 5700, but looked the same in every other way. My understanding from Ping is that the 5700 is a Chinese knockoff, so that should raise questions.
The second Rapture I received had an Aldila NV shaft that looked completely authentic, but was a fake and was a slightly different shade of green and had slightly different sized writing.
3. Ask for pictures of the grips. Check out the Ping website of the different grip options are. Needless to say, neither of the Raptures that I received had the correct grip, although both had the "Ping" logo on it. You may also want to go to a golf shop to see what the grips should look and feel like.
4. Lastly, ask for a close up of the serial number of the driver. Every Ping has one. I believe the serial number should be on the sole of the driver itself, the fake that looked real had it on the neck of the driver, not the sole. Go to any golf shop that sells Rapture Drivers and look at where the serial number should be located.
Hope this is helpful.
