so~ i was asked on a forum to show how i hem my jeans with original hem. there are several ways to hem using original...but this is the easiest way w/out a doubt. i'm using a crappy disgusting pair of fake 7fam and this was done very quickly ...but if you follow the easy steps in this pictorial, you'll be a pro in no time! i recommend that you practice on an old pair of thrasher jeans or on a fake pair you may have purchased before you knew better. as an active member and moderator of authenticforum i am urging you to NOT participate in the buying/selling/wearing of counterfeit denim. please visit my 'me' page for more information...and i hope to see you on the forum! :o)
first~ you are going to start off by cutting off the original hem. i know it's sort of scary, that's why it's a good idea to practice on an old thrasher pair of jeans first.
just cut straight across with a nice sharp pair of quality scissors. you will want to make this cut approximately 1/2 inch longer than your desired inseam. ** go ahead...make the cut.
now you're going to sew the freshly cut inseam with a single stitch. fold up about 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch and begin sewing. you should be sewing right about in the middle of the folded part. you can use any color of thread for this part- since it will be hidden when you re-attach the original hem.
so ~ this is what you should be looking at now..only better! i'm doing a quicky job here. ;o)
now ~ you're going to cut the excess off of the original hem. trim it down to where it's almost the same width as the hem itself....but not quite. take this raw edge and do a quick machine zig-zag stitch to keep it from fraying. [not shown]
take some pins and pin the original hem back on the new inseam to make sure it's not too long. if you need to shorten the length~ undo the stitching on one end so that you have a long strip instead of a continuous circle. cut off the desired amount and then hand sew the two ends back together.
you're going to want to place the original hem right on top of the new inseam, making sure to cover the single stitch you sewed earlier. the original hem should pretty much be sitting right on top..flush..with the inseam.
it's time to re-attach the original hem
permanently ! i always sew on the outside...and in this case i'm using
invisible/clear type thread on the spool and my bobbin color is 'jean blue'. use a
single stitch just above the original hems thread. this makes for a flat finish. if you are matching the original hems thread color...sew directly on top of the original threading, making sure to match the stitch length. --------------------> so, just keep sewing all the way around - and sew on and sew on and scooby dooby doo-beee! you're almost done!! :o)
now that you've finished altering your inseam and re-attaching the original hem (great job!) ...you're gonna want to get rid of the extra bulk in the inside. there's actually not much bulk (layers) so this is really easy. you can either iron it down flat and then tack it w/hand stitching...or you can cut off the inner inseam (the one you don't need!) to about 1/4 (or less) of an inch and then to a tight zig-zag stitch around the raw edge either with a machine or by hand.
