I just bought a brand new Plasma TV but found that the DVD's were still lacking that picture quality that I saw at the store.  I thought that the component cables would bring in that ultra clear picture... Although they helpped what I found out is that without Blue-Ray (or however they are spelling it), the players still won't play the higher resolution!

I am by no means a video expert, but I know a good picture when I see it.  I found that although Blue-Ray is supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, Upscaling will bring in the picture just a hair under blue-ray and the player doesn't cost $700.

The new Philips DVD player has the upscaling, and I got mine new for $70 (compare that to $700).  The one thing that draws many people away is getting the Monster HDMI cord.  It runs like $100!  If you get it, it's still cheaper than Blue-Ray, but I found here on eBay another HDMI gold cord for $10.  Wasn't Monster brand, but my friend has a Monster cable.  We tried both, and neither of us could tell the difference.  Skip the Monster Brand and just go with one with gold heads.  This will put all DVD's in near HD quality!

Blue-Ray?  Impressive, but I have over 400 DVD's!!!!  I am not switching over to ANOTHER NEW FORMAT!!!!  With the Upscaller, there really isn't that much lacking, and for the money you will save, it is 100% worth it!!!

It's been a few weeks with my new Philips DVD player, and it's pretty basic...  There are other better DVD players with more features, but after spending $2500 on a TV, I really couldn't afford the best of the best.  So far, the only thing I really find lacking is my old DVD player would pick up where it left off when it was turned off with the DVD still in, AND it had it's own volume control...  Other than that, this is a great little player!!!!
