Just the other day, I was driving along the highway, and noticed the strangest thing. It made me do a double take twice! The dog was driving! No way I can make this stuff up! The lady was buckled up behind the wheel with the poodle perched on her lap. I must admit the dog’s driving technique would make my previous driving instructor proud: both hands, oops paws, on the wheel at the 10 and 2 o’clock positions. The lady was talking on her cell phone, while smoking a cigarette. The dog was really driving! After the initial shock quickly wore off, it dawned on me who was in control of the brakes. As experienced drivers, we instinctively know when to brake and how much pressure is needed. But what if you’re not driving? My concern was immediately for the safety of the four-legged driver who was not strapped. Under less extreme conditions, we do sometimes let the pets have free roam while we’re driving, but how safe is that? In some States, one could get ticketed, especially if it leads to an accident. Unfortunately, the standard seatbelts are ill-equipped to handle Kitty or Fido. Enter, stage left, the latest in pet safety technology. The most basic pet safety gear is the harness which comes in many sizes, with adjustable straps. The car’s seatbelt just slips between the wearer and the harness, providing a comfortable fit while keeping your pet secure during emergency braking. A more comfortale ride for smaller dog breeds is the car seat, available in a myriad of choices, these seats genrally give smaller dogs a boost so they can see out on their own without needing to crawl up in your lap.
If you have a pooch who likes to lap up the wind, consider doggie goggles.
Yep, shades for dogs! Pet eyewear will protect her from harmful UV rays, as well as dirt particles typically kicked up along the highway. Most now offer comfortable foam straps that are adjustable with interchangeable lenses for a better fit. Note: make sure the glasses are clearly marked 100% UV protection. Ok, just one more. When I saw this, I couldn’t resist: life vest for dogs! I was surprised by this because dogs are excellent swimmers. But for those who like to take the boat out to fairly far distances, it is best to ensure your pet’s safety. Although excellent swimmers, the life vest can allow him to swim and relax, thus conserving his energy. Also, a good idea in the event the dog becomes injured during an accident and swimming would be too difficult. Pet life vests also come in different sizes based on the weight of the dog. Comfortable adjustable straps allow for a custom fit and the snaps make putting it on and taking it off much easier. I had a hard time finding them at a local pet store, but perhaps at a few boating stores. Checking online pet stores would be the best choice. For my own safety, I drove on. I glanced in the rear view mirror numerous times. The dog seemed content being in control of the wheel. Who am I to judge? I sent thoughts of good luck to the driver and even more thoughts of wisdom to the lady.
