Perfect Puppy Housebreaking

by human many times broken

Read carefully and make sure these supplies are on hand before beginning to "house train yourself".  This system will work for the at home owner.

  1.  A crate is your pet's bed.  Puppy sleeps in crate that is big enough for it to lie, stand and move about a bit.  Pad the bottom with an old pillow or blankets.  This is your pet's new bed.
  2. Leash and collar.  Even a new puppy can quickly adjust to a new collar.  Remove it when sleeping if pup gets it in her mouth.  You don't want to tighten it so tight this can't happen.
  3. Bowls for food, and water. Toys for play.  Thrift shops are a great place to get discarded small stuffed toys.  Wash and put through the dryer before offering to  puppy.

Awakening: Lease & collar, take puppy to area outside that you wish it to use for potty area.  Say go potty and praise profusely for elimation. Play outside for a few minutes if you wish, still on leash.

Breakfast: Feed & water puppy.  play for a few minutes, take pup out with leash to designated area.   Water provided outside also if wanted.

Play time: free time on linolium, usually kitchen. Must NOT be a carpeted area.  Carpet is nearly impossisble and very expensive to de-scent.

Morn Nap: Back to crate with a toy or two.  Free time for human several hours while pup sleeps!

After morning nap:: leash & collar & outside.  Praise, play, enjoy your puppy.  Water can be also provided outside.  All suggested times and schedules can be adjusted to fit your day.

Lunch: Feed & water puppy, take out to area. After elimation and lavish praise, play, romp and return to house, all on leash unless potty area is fenced in enclosure such as a puppy pen.

Play time on linolium if you have the time, otherwise crate. Puppy is not allowed on carpeted areas at all during this housebreaking.  Don't allow that mistake to happen.  Also, do NOT reprimand mistake made on linolium.  That is YOUR fault.  Clean it up well and hush!  Accidents can happen and are easily sanitized on linolium.

Afternoon nap: Leash & collar & outside play, praise & return to crate or kitchen supervised play.

Dinner: Feed & water, take to area.  Supervised play or crate.  At any time humans may carry, have pet on lap or otherwise interact on linolium IF potty break has been given. Whatever you do not want an adult dog to do, don't permit in puppy.  This warns of sofa or human bed use by puppy.

Evening: On lap with family or on linolium for free time.  Our dogs join the family for evening tv or games, but on lap, not carpeting.  No biting pernmitted!  Work on this as pup's natural instincts are to nip litter mates.  If you don't like being nipped by adult dog, don't permit this now.

Bed time: take puppy out on leash before you go to bed.  Make sure she has time to do necessary duty.

Crate for evening, end of day, end of play, end of attention, no drink or food to be given at this time. Small toy may remain in crate.

This system, if followed faithfully, will housebreak any canine, in my humble experience.  No time schedule was mentioned so you can adjust to your day.  If you need to leave to shop, etc, potty break and crate time.

Do NOT leave food & water in crate.  This will stimulate need to eliminate and cause poor critter to lie in soiled bedding.

In severe weather, and a very small breed puppy, using puppy pads or newspapers may be necessary.  But... the schedule is the same.  Have an area for elimination indoors & take her to it.

Your puppy will signal you prior to "an accident".  Be alert!  Circling means poopy break.  Whining or excess face licking means I gotta pee break.  These are the signals our puppy uses to alert us to immediate break need.

Please enjoy this bundle of love!  Keep pet up to date on shots, clean and feed according to breed and age.  You are investing in years of happiness, or yet another pet in rescue services or worse.  Puppies are all love... well, maybe just a tiny bit of mischief thrown in to keep you on your toes!
