Amish are called "Plain People" partly because they dress plainly. Contemporary dress dates from the 16th century. All women in the community use the same type of pattern to sew for their families. The purchase a whole bolt of material and make a dress or shirt for each family member. The rules require that only solid colors be used, usually black, blue, burgundy, green brown or purple. A married women wears a black cape and apron to church. A single woman wears a white apron and cape. Working around the farm, women usually wear gray aprons, saving black for dressy occasions. The cape is triangular piece of cloth, the apex of which fastens in the center back of the apron with the long sides going over the shoulders to cross over and be fastened with straight pins at the waist in front. Women usually wear black shoes and stocking for dress but will often go barefoot around the house. Children also wear black shoes for dress but use sneakers or bare feet for school and home. All women wear head covers according to scripture in 1 Corinthians that says it is dishonorable for women to pray with uncovered heads. Wardrobes are small. Women need only four dresses: "one for wash, one for wear, one for dress and one for spare." Dress rules are very strict. Any deviation from the dress code may cause the offender to be excommunicated.
