Pemmican comes from an Indian word meaning "to grease." The Cree Indians of Montana and Central Canada first made pemmican. Not surprisingly, it makes a good trail food.
- Pound 1/2 pound of jerky into a powder or grind it very fine.
- Add 1-1/2 cups raisins or currents, ground dry apricots, or your favorite dried fruit.
- Add 3/4 cup finely chopped and unroasted nuts
- Heat 2 teaspoons honey and 4 tablespoons peanut butter and blend all together.
- Add 3/4 teaspoon cayenne powder and work it thoroughly through the pemmican.
Shape into cakes and place into plastic bags and store in a cool, dry place. Outside of the fridge, it will keep for many days without a problem. A pinch of this is about 200 calories, which is enough to keep you going while you're trekking the wilderness. The sugar in the fruit is balanced with the protein in the jerky, providing the fully-rounded nutrition that your body needs.
