A Little bit about Peafowl/Peacocks
Peafowl is the proper term when refering to these birds,a Peacock is a male peafowl and a peahen is the female. These birds are very beautiful and the first instinct when you see one is I WANT THAT,But And yes there is always a but before getting any new animal with peafowl you need to research what you are getting into,This should really be done anytime before starting a new venture.
Okay Onto some necessities and needs of peafowl as well as behavior and personality and even answers to some simple color questions.
I will start with basic needs. If You are going to keep your peafowl in a pen there are many things to consider,1-the pen should be made of sturdy wire that is not easily torn apart by predators.2- It should have a minimum of 6 square feet per bird.(this Is only a minimum of course more is better) 3- It should have a top that they can not break their necks on if they jump up and hit it but it needs to be of strong netting, preferably a heavy poultry netting. 4 - it should have easy access to food and water containers,(and if you live in a hot climate zone they would like to have what we call standing tubs or bowls,Peafowl will stand in a water bowl to cool their bodies down in extreme heat).Peafowl can be free ranged if trained as you go ,Be sure they have tall trees nearby or they will be on your roof or they will head for the nearest tall trees.Remember if free ranging this is a valuable bird that you are risking to predators or thieves. And Be sure they will not be a nuisance to your neighbors.
Next -Feed ,You will find several opinions on feed so I will try to stick to some basics,Peafowl use a high protein feed (we Use a Gamebird crumble 28% protein ,mixed with scratch and 20% egg pellets.for adult birds in equal amounts of each,We try to keep the adults protein levels right around 22%.For Babies we use the 28% gamebird by itself as a starter feed,Some People use turkey starter) Peafowl Love vegetables and fruit and this is an excellent source of natural vitamins for them and helps to keep the colors bright.Leaves from trees that are safe is a good source of tanins for them also. They will even graze to some extent if given room.
behavior - It is not that uncommon for an adult male to get a little territorial during breeding season So keep your eye on him if entering his pen in early summer. They can be trained to eat from your hands and some will even let you pet them if handled a lot while babies. If you are hatching your own The best way to imprint a new chick is to pick it up and breath on it or kiss it as soon as it has hatched. This way they know your scent. And will be less skittish as babies.Baby peafowl will cry whentheir habitat is changed this is normal even a simple cage cleaning will sometimes upset them.A little extra love will usually sooth their fears.
Peafowl eggs take 28 days to hatch, usually the hatchability  on shipped peafowl eggs is not as good as on smaller varieties of eggs,I feel this may be due to the size, which lends itself to more sloshing about if handled rough by a frustrated postal worker.
Now The Hard Part,Colors- There are 46 colors and varieties currently accepted by the UNITED PEAFOWL ASSOCIATION.These Are not mixed breeds but true color breeds and mutations.I hear so often Do you have purebred peafowl.YES BUT THERE ARE 46 varieties of PUREBRED peafowl. So which kind were you looking for?
Some colors breed true always ,some colors are sexlinks, and some colors have variations such as the Pied Peafowl,This Gene Does not always produce pied babies,If Pied is bred to pied you may get 50%pied,25%Colored and 25% what is called a dark pied(this has the white marking but only a spot on the neck or a white wing feather)Peafowl genetics are very fascinating and complicated So I am unable to go through it all here.
I hope This Guide Has Helped in some ways your understanding of peafowl as a breed.Thank You for Looking,Pat
