Patagonia is a large area located in the Andes mountains and residing in Argentina on the east and Chile to the west. In the picture above, it is represented by the dark orange color.
The physical geography of the region is rather sparse consisting of vast steppe like plains, rising about 330 feet at a time, and covered with shingle and almost void of vegetation. In the lower plains you'll find ponds and some vegetation.
On the Andes side, animal life becomes more abundant since there is more vegetation. The rainfall is high on the western side and the ocean is warmer, making the area more habitual. However, this gives rise to cold and humid air masses, contributing to the ice-fields and glaciers. There you will find the largest ice-fields in the southern hemisphere outside of Antarctica.
