Creating a Happy and Safe Environment for your Bird
Toys can help turn a house into a home. They bring fun and exercise into a bird's environment and can help minimize boredom. However, they must be safe in order not to risk possible injury. The size, shape, and durability of toys selected must be based on the type of bird; very simply, larger birds need tougher toys.
For instance, plastic beads can be lots of fun for a budgie, but can spell disaster for a parrot. Be careful of toys hung by chains and jingle-bell type bells. Toes and beeks can get stuck in them. Mirrors are fun for small birds, but larger birds could break them. Pieces of leather, rawhide dog chews, metal rings and small lava rocks are some of the favorite toys for larger birds.

Swings provide a wonderful source of entertainment for many birds. There are a large variety of different sizes available. These range from the simple plastic swing for canaries to the elaborate activity centers for larger birds.
-
Playpens are activity centers outside of the cage. They help keep the bird in one area while providing a variety of fun and games. They can be located on top of the cage or be freestanding gym. Playpens usually consist of perches, ladders and swings with food and water cups on a flat base designed for total enjoyment. Toys can also be added to the playpen for more pleasure. Quality workmanship is important. Sharp edges, protruding nails or flimsy construction can injure birds.

Tents can add enjoyment to smaller sized birds, providing they are of right size and durability for your bird. Caution should be take with tents that have wool or felt like material inside. Toe nails cause the material to fray and could get tangled around legs and toes. Many safe tents are made of fleece like lining. I DO NOT RECCOMEND BIRD TENTS OR HUTS FOR LARGER BIRDS!!(Greys, Eclectus, Cockatoos & similar) Larger birds have very strong beaks. I have tested a few (under supervision) in my Aviary and HAVE NOT found any material strong enough to hold up.

Liberty Bells and cow bells are best to use if making your own toys. Size must also be taken into consideration. The clicker inside should be watched with larger birds. If it's to small, it could be swallowed. Jingle-bells could spell disaster. Toes and beaks could get stuck in them.

Only natural cotton ropes and material should be used for birds. Clothesline IS NOT RECOMENDED. It contains nylon which can cause injury to feet, legs or neck.
