How many of you out there like myself either work on a tight budget or do not have the room for an air compresser and Air Brush set up? Well I have a few steps that will help you turn a show winner from an average spray paint can. Items needed, A couple pairs of disposible latex gloves, Tack Cloth (theses can be picked up at several different auto parts stores) a small shallow bowl ( needs to be no deeper than 2 inches) and of course your paint abd primer.
#1 the first thing you want to do is rinse the model of in warm water using a mild dish detergent to get any oil and mold release off of the surface.
#2 Next you want let the model and all washed parts to completly Dry.
#3 After the model has completly dried put on your latex gloves to keep from getting any body oils on it and take you tack cloth and slowly wipe down the entire model surface to remove any dust or dirt. Once you have done this you are ready for your primer.
#4 Take you small shallow bowl and fill it with about an inch and a half of warm water. Shake your primer for about 15 seconds before setting it in the bowl of waterfor about 35 to 60 seconds depending on how hot or warm you have the water. The warm water will help the primer flow real smooth and help with some of the orange peel you get from user spray cans. Apply your first coat a little thin and dont worry if you still see a little if the original color. After about 1 hour you can apply a 2nd coat of primer and make it a little heavier. I have had better luck using testers flat white verses the gray primer because the color stands out better on the white and the white flows out alot smoother.
#5 Now your ready for your paint. I Always use tester or models masters paint because they both have a real good flow and dry with a good shine and your normally do not have to add any clear once they are dry. They seem to be the best out there in the spray can. Take your same Shallow bowl and add some more warn water. Same as step 4 let the paint set in the water 35 to 60 seconds depending on the temperature.
#6 After removing paint from water quickly dry off and shake for about 10 Seconds. Spray your first coat on with a light mist just barely covering the model and let dry for a few hours. After it has had a few hours to dry apply your secound coat just a bit thicker than the first coat and let dry over night. After the paint has had 24 hours apply a third and final coat. Appy your third coat a little heavier than the first 2 coats and make sure that all of your light spots get covered. You need to let it set and dry for at least 48 hours before handling because you do not want to take a chance on getting any finger prints in it.
Following these steps you should be able to appy a great looking paint job without having to buy a fancy compresser, airbrush and all the hardware.
