Hi Gang! Just though I would write in and give you guys a few tips on how to save $ and produce better than satisfactory paint jobs on metal.
First off, let me tell you now that I am a welder, not a pro painter, but I do really good work on Hot Rods and trailers and things made of metal.
As you already probobly know, the trick is in the prep work. Sand all metal to bright shiney. There should be no rust, paint or dirt, oil, etc. on what your painting.
This next line will come as a shocker. The best paint I have found to paint your projects is Rustoleum. The reasons are simple. Rustoleum has spent several million dollars in research and developement finding the best chemicals to produce a paint job that combats rust. Their paint really seals out moisture.
There are basically three ways to apply paint. Spray cans,Brush or roller and spray gun. The only advantage I can see to use a spray gun is if you have a large area to paint. I really wouldnt do brush or roller if you want a really first class job.
Believe it or not, the ole "rattle can" paint job is really the way to go if you dont have a large area. For larger trailers and cars and trucks, use your spray gun. Pour about 3/4 paint to 1/4 thinner into your gun can. Mix thoroughly with a clean stirring stick. You can buy Rustoleaum by the quart or Gallon.
Use their primer first, either the gray or my personal favorite, the red oxide. Spray evenly. Remember several thin coats are better than one thick one. Let dry. Sand any runs out. After primer is dry, Go ahead and spray your finish coat. I use black more than any other color. It just looks really good to me.
I have taken really rusty, old, crappy, parts and cleaned them up and painted them with Rustoleum Black and they look Brand new! Good Luck, and God Bless! Mikey
