Selling delicate isntruments is dangerous when shipping them. To pack a wooden guitar, DO NOT USE STYROFOAM PEANUTS. They can settle in shipping and leave the instrument vulnerable. DO NOT TAPE BUBBLE WRAP OR PLASTIC to the guitar, as the tape may mar the fisnish, and removing it may cause damage.
Crumpled newspaper is the best packing material. It will hold the guitar steady, and provide insulation that keeps the guitar safe. It also allows air to circulate, and lets the moisture in and out as necessary.
Loosen the strings on guitars, mandolins, lutes and ukes. On banjos, loosen the head, too, that will keep temperature changes and jostling from causing damage.
Double box when possible, or put an extra layer of cardboard around the instrument.
Reinforce the neck with cardboard or a sturdy material. Here is where you can use styrofoam, not peanuts, but a block cut to secure the neck.
