Most PSP guides (e.g. for devhook) use technical terms that make them inaccessible to most. This guide will provide the knowledge in plain english on how to play games on Memory Stick.
What homebrews really are?
Homebrews are non-commercial home-made programs on the Sony Play Station Platform freely accessible on the internet. It is very similar to freeware and shareware on Computers. Homebrews mainly run only on Sony PSP with firmware 1.50. That's why there are so many downgraders designed to downgrade a Sony PSP back to firmware 1.50.
While this guide is on how to install homebrews, I will talk about how to how to use some major homebrews in othe guides.
There are mainly three types of homebrews:
1. Homebrews that serve as gaming device (e.g. device hook) (will talk about in another guide)
2. Homebrews that serve as programs (e.g. PSP PDA or ebook reader) (self explanatory)
3. Homebrews that serve as downgraders (e.g. downdater 2.0 to 1.50) (will talk about in another guide)
How to Install Homebrews?
You may hear the term root folder of your Sony PSP a lot. You can ignore that term as it simply refers to the psp memory stick. The following pictures and examples will give you a much better idea of what's going on and how to install homebrews.
1. You will need a laptop or desktop, a USB cable, a PSP memory card, and a DVD if the homebrews are located on a DVD.
2. You will put the PSP memory stick pro duo into the psp and the USB cable connecting the laptop and the Sony PSP.
3. You will turn turn on your PSP, and go to settings menu and choose USB connection. You will see the USB mode screen on your PSP and on your laptop, you will see a new removable device. On my laptop, the new removable device is device H (the designated driver for my PSP).
4. Now it's time to copy the homebrews you want to transfer to your memory stick. The homebrew I want to copy is called NeoCD (from the PSP Arcade Game Museum). It is a gaming device. I go to my DVD driver and then copy the two files NeoCD and NeoCD'1~%. You don't need to know the detail, just need to know that almost all homebrews have two folders one with % and one without. Now I want to copy the two filesfrom my DVD driver to the folder PSP/Game/. Yes, you want to put those two files inside the Game folder in your Sony PSP. There's where you will put your homebrews into.
5. Now you will see on your laptop and your Sony PSP that files are being transfered to the PSP/Game/ folder of your Sony PSP. When you process is finish, you end the USB connection with your computer. you then go to Game menu and choose Memory Stick TM. You will then see the homebrew you just installed. Enjoy and have a lot of fun!!
