Stunning and Safe

The front porch lighting, as well as overall outdoor lighting is the first thing that welcomes your guest as they approach your home. As such, it creates the first impression of your home, particularly in the evening. It is important to take extra time in selecting the proper light and styles for both attractiveness and security. Outdoor lighting is available in many styles just like interior lighting, so you can easily harmonize the lighting with the architecture of your home.

Plan on post lanterns, wall lanterns and hanging lights at or above eye level for the entranceway. Also, landscape lighting is excellent for highlighting walkways. As mentioned before, post lanterns with photocells are a real convenience. The photocell automatically turns the lantern on at dark and off at dawn.

When planning your lighting, consider the extra safety and security that can be provided by adequate outdoor lighting. Good lighting inside and outside the garage with switches in the house as well as in the garage are safety measures you’ll want to include. Many people prefer to use energy saving fluorescent products to save money on utility bills while still allowing generous light levels. There can be concern over the temperature affecting the starting of compact fluorescent bulbs, but most will operate well down to 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Good outdoor lighting is one of the least expensive and one of the most effective security measures you can take. Combines with the aesthetic benefits to your home, it’s definitely a worthwhile investment!

Select a design and size to complement your house while providing sufficient lighting for safety.  When installing a wall lantern, size the fixture to the door and surrounding space. Wall lanterns should be mounted slightly above eye level 60° to 66° from the center of the fixture to the floor. Post top lanterns are an excellent way to light a walkway, while complimenting wall lanterns. Large post top lanterns make a better impression when used in large open spaces.
