Why An Oriental Rug?
The answer is pretty simple and straight forward, because you can remove the damn thing if it gets dirty. Over the years , the one thing that I have learned which clearly justifies switching from mounted carpeting to Oriental Rugs or for that fact area rugs, is that it is absolutely astounding the amount of dirt that accumulates and lodges within the body of a mounted carpet and for that fact area rugs and oriental rugs and carpets. The difference being that the latter can be removed and with it all the accumulation of dirt and god knows what else. All you need then is to know someone that does really take the time and puts in the effort necessary to properly clean your rug and rid it of the dirt and scum and possible insects that might have made it their living ground.
A good wash first requires that the dirt accumulation in the rug is properly extracted. This can be done a number of ways, from vacuuming the rug face down from the back repeatedly with a vacuum which has beaters on its roll ( older ones do and some new ones do also but not all) , or running it through a dirt extraction machine ( different types of dirt extractors exist, from advanced resonators to older ones which actually have different beating mechanism literally beating the dirt out of the rug). If the dirt is not extracted properly and the rug is washed with dirt in it, the dirt and sand particles will act like a sand paper literally destroying the pile on the rug.
Once dirt is extracted, depending on stains and spills and such, rug should be soaked in warm water for a short period of time to dislodge whatever else , followed by brushing ( hand or machine) several times front and back, and then throughly rinsed, and afterwards remaining water should be completely extracted to speed drying and preventing mildew buildup during the drying process.
You should know that cleaning a rug properly could be a gruesome task, one that even if you pay someone $8 a sqft , they might not be willing to do. Always consider cleaning your rugs yourself. It could be fun and because its your property, you will give it the care it needs that a hired agent might discount. If you have the space ( a cement , wooden or Asphalt patio or area, you will enjoy doing it.
A not so thick / average room size oriental rug should completely dry on a good sunny day , if it is washed early in the morning ; If not it will be dry enough to take inside and take out a second day to sun it out and completely dry it. There are a few other factors that help rug drying. a mild wind, an average fan, physically moving the rug every 15 minutes or so , ....
Area rugs are a better alternative to mounted carpeting but the fact that chemical materials and glues together with artificial fibers ( which down the road they will most probably find that it causes cancer or warts or god knows what) , the clear choice is a rug with natural fibers being, silk, wool, cotton, or other natural material..
So do yourself and your loved ones a favor, remove all your carpeting, fix your floors whichever way you desire , and buy yourself some oriental rugs! You will probably be alive to remember me positively 50 years from now!
I will revise and better this article as time permits. Questions and comments are welcome.
