Here's a little tip to help you when it's time to pack up the items you sold...
Take all of your boxes, even the free USPS ones, and collapse them down flat. Many boxes will have the dimensions stamped on one of the bottom flaps. If they don't, measure length, height, and width and record the numbers on the bottom flap yourself with a heavy black marker. When all boxes are marked, put them in order from the smallest number to the largest. Don't go crazy trying to order length versus width versus height. Just take the smallest of the three numbers; then the second smallest; then the third. For example, a box 9x9x9 would be ordered before a box 9x9x10 and that box would be ordered before a box 15x9x9 (but not before a box 15x12x2).
Now, when you're ready to box an item; simply measure the longest side and flip through your stock of boxes until you get to that number. Next, measure the next longest side and zero in on the box that will fit the item without leaving too much extra space.
We all know that no matter how sturdy the item, it's best to fill all of the remaining room with styrofoam peanuts, bubble wrap, air bags or newspaper to ensure that the item doesn't move around during shipping. I have several large lawn & leaf bags labeled for peanuts, tissue, bubble wrap, etc. so it's easy to find which ever material I want to use for packing.
By the way, if you're using newspaper or peanuts as your packing material; make sure you put your item in a plastic bag or wrap it in tissue paper so the newspaper print doesn't transfer to it and/or the peanuts don't cling to it.
