What Is Organic?
Certified Organic products are grown and processed without the use of synthetic chemicals and fertilizers. It is an natural method of farming and production and is increasingly being recognized as being on the leading edge of environmental conservation. Organic products are not just chemical free by testing. They are about the way the product ingredients have been grown, prepared, and processed.
Organic Personal Care Products
Many US manufacturers have taken notice of the growing trend of consumers to choose organic products. Many products now meet the strict ingredients and processing criteria in accordance with the United States Department of Agriculture's National Organic Program. Recently Colgate-Palmolive purchased one of the oldest lines of organic products, Tom's of Maine. Also the large mainstream cosmetics company, Estee Lauder, has come out with it's own separate line of organic products, Origins Organics.
Organic Certification
Currently, body care products are not required to comply with the stringent organic food standards maintained by certification bodies such as the USDA, leading to large numbers of so-called "organic" body care products now on the market.
Since water is the primary ingredient in many cosmetics, some manufacturers are claiming to use organic hydrosols, or floral water, to green wash their products and make organic label claims whilst using the same synthetic toxic ingredients that would NEVER be allowed in organic food products. This practice has the potential to destroy the integrity of the organic name.
Therefore, each of us must read all labels very carefully in order to determine the exact ingredients and the actual status of their organic claims.
