Many of Patagonia's products are made from Organic Cotton; in fact in 1996 they converted their entire sportswear line to 100% organically grown cotton. So what exactly is Organic Cotton? Isn't all cotton organic?
Well, the answer is NO. Very little cotton that is raised commercially is organic. For example, conventional cotton crops in California alone are dusted with 6.9 million pounds of chemicals every year.
Patagonia is extremely concerned about the environment. They have done their homework and have located farmers who have grown cotton without harmful chemicals for years, using methods that support biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. Growing organically takes more time and requires an above average farmer, one who is dedicated to the environment, and knowledgeable about nature and the soil and alternatives to chemicals. It costs a little more that way, but Patagonia believes it's worth it.
