I have been designing custom made gowns successfully for over 10 years including via mail and yes, it can be done. I've noticed some interesting links coming out of China offering these so called custom gowns. Be wary of the quality. I have reviewed them carefully and must say some look good but I always wonder how cheap the fabric may be. They rarely disclose what the actual material is. In addition, what they are offering is usually custom sizing not necessarily something you are involved in the design process with. Also look at shipping costs or hidden fees.
Its very important to inquire on the quality of the fabric, especially if you wish to preserve the gown. In my experience in this industry I find that brides-to- be know exactly how they envision themselves on their special day. Here are som helpful tips on how to determine what you truly want on your day. Secondly, I will list some helpful tips on how to find someone to make a dress for you even if its long distance.
Helpful Hints on finding or designing the perfect dress:
1. Clip pictures from magazines and note what you like about the dress, the skirt, the beadwork etc.
2. Lay out all of you pictures and you will be surprised how you really start seeing a story. Look for consistencies in neckline or shape etc.
3. Ask yourself if you truly feel comfortable with going through the process of having something custom made. Remember, thats where selecting the right dressmaker is crucial.
4. Go to a bridal shop and play dress up! Try different styles, this will ensure that the look you envision will work for you. Once you have the style you can work on the details such as fabric and embroidery and thats where custom making can help making it unique for you.
Helpful Hints on finding the perfect dressmaker:
1. Having something custom made can really make it special. You can find many qualified designers locally or online. If you prefer working with someone in person check for a local dressmaker.
2. If finding a local is a challenge seek a designer online. With todays technology this can work just as well.
3. Keep your budget in mind but dont necessarily disclose it. Let the dressmaker quote you the price. He/she may price below your expected target.
4. Custom made does not necessarily mean more expensive. Keep in mind that you may be saving on alterations (unless its mail order). You may need afinal fitting.
5. If working via mail, scan or send the designer as many pictures of what you like and ask for a final sketch including fabric options.
The entire process can be enjoyable and rewarding, ask the right questions, check references and most importantly make sure you feel comfortable with the person.
Hope this helps!
