The Order of the Silesian Eagle 2nd Class (Schleischer Adler 2. Klasse) was often awarded veterans of the post-WWI Polish actions somewhat similar to a campaign medal for taking part in the defense of Silesia. It was created 16 June 1919 by General Leutnant Von Friedenburg for three months service in the Silesian border campaigns against Polish nationalists. The vast majority were distributed in late-1921 to 1934 and were accompanied by an award certificate to members of the German Freikorps. This was one of the few Freikorps awards that were allowed to be worn on uniforms during the Third Reich. It is unknown how many were awarded but estimates place the number below 250,000.
The medal is in the form of a facing eagle with an upside-down crescent across it's breast and a scroll below with SILESIA impressed on it. A suspension ring above the eagle's head attached the award to the ribbon. There are many variants of this award. Copies are common.
The ribbon for the Order of the Silesian Eagle 2nd Class is a pale yellow with 2 edge stripes of white. The original ribbon was a little over 3cm wide (3.01cm to 3.09cm) and had a fine silk weave with an intricate weft design. Replacement ribbons can be made of most any material - with a poly based weave and minimal weft design being the most common current production, making it almost twice as thick as the original silk ribbon! These are only typical examples used for simplicity of explanation and is not an exhaustive list.
