Many times one of the first things to consider when looking at purchasing a vehicle is how you plan to pay for it.  I have found online financing offers convenient, competitive quotes right from the comfort of wherever you are with your computer.  It offers hassle free, scam free, no pressure quotes direct to you.  However, this being said, it is important to know a few things that can make or break a good finance consideration.  Things like time on your job, time at your residence, how much you owe, how much you make, and how well you have paid in the past and currently all get mixed into the recipe that determines the final outcome of a succesful finance venture.  If you have recently changed jobs or moved, these things actually bring your score down.  Generally the lenders like to see a 3 year or better stability to factor in their decision to lend you any money.  Proof of income may and often is required, so be sure of that amount when applying.

You can and should get a free look at your credit report to see what is being reported, before you apply to purchase anything on credit.  TransUnion and Equifax are the two primary sources for rating your credit to purchase a vehicle.  It is interesting that some things can be on one, and not the other, and of course, this all effects your credit score.  Recently I helped a newly turned 18 yr. old finance her first vehicle, interestingly enough though was the fact that her credit reports had showed her already paying for a vehicle, and 2 credit cards!  It turns out her social security number was close to her older brother's number, and the info on him blended onto her reports!  If you find errors on your report that are effecting your credit score, immediately have them corrected.  It usually takes about 30 days to have a corrected report.  Follow the steps each credit bureau offers for situations that need correcting.

I would like for you to remember that if you are planning a purchase from a dealer, and they offer financing, you may well pay for that added service.  It is how those boys in that office make their living. It has been my sad experience to hear over and over again how a customer was previously "put together" by a dealer.  They sign contracts, not realizing what they are signing many times, because of the process that these skilled financers use, are able to make you believe something else than what you are actually agreeing to on contract.  Never let emotion (Oh I LOVE this ...!), cloud your judgement.  It will make you settle for a deal you will regret when the burden of ownership overcomes your love for the thing.  You should always go into a transaction from a position of strength, which is what online finance, and free credit reports can provide.  These things can give you a real good idea of the reality of your credit rating, and what you generally can qualify for as an interest rate.

What also can affect the interest rate that you will ultimately get is the actual vehicle you are looking at purchasing.  Generally the older the vehicle, the higher the interest rate.  It should not be a drastic difference, but it will be higher for an older unit.

Finally, when you get to the point of actually filling out a credit application, if you find you are unsure about any aspect of  the application, stop.  Do not guess on anything.  Remember what affects your approval, and be as factual as possible.  You might even consider asking a friend or family member that has experience in this to help you.
