Before becoming a mom I didn't realize how important loveys/blankets were. My first recollection of a child with a lovey was linus in Charlie Brown. Now that I am a mom of 2 and one on the way I can't believe how important a lovey can be to your baby. Like you I'm sure you've recieved lots of blankets but how can you even guess which one your child will like?
Recognizing the signs
- Your child will prefer one blanket over another. At naptime or bedtime they may become easily consoled and get a peaceful look when holding their favorite blankie.
- When you try to exchange the blanket for another your child starts to get fuzzy and tries to hold the blanket/lovey but frequently releases it.
- Your child's eyes open wide and he/she reaches out for his/her favorite lovey. In the picture below you can see my daughter holding on to her blankie for dear life. Out of all her blankies/lovey she prefers this red disney blanket.
It's important as a parent to be on the lookout for the above signs. Try not to choose loveys you particularly like and think well my child will love it as well. You will never know what your child will prefer. My youngest daughter had a slew of pink and purple loveys. I thought she should like the girlie ones but as you can see she prefered the bright red mickey mouse disney blanket.
Obtaining a replacement
- Once you have identified a favorite lovey/blanket it is SO IMPORTANT you look for a backup. It is preferable you buy one right away and switch between the two so that the infant/toddler gets that familiar smell and touch. It will also give you a chance to wash it. God knows between the drool and food etc they need to be washed often.
- Search online if lovey/blanket is no longer available in the stores. Sometimes you may find the same one online even though they are sold out in stores.
- Ebay is loaded with sellers selling loveys. Just be sure you read the description carefully and buy from a trusted seller with good feedback. Many excellent used loveys are like new and would be a great purchase but you need to carefully research and be sure to ask the seller questions. You don't want any surprises when you recieve your item. Remember this is for your little one.
As a mom I completely understand the importance of loveys/security blankets. They give your child a sense of security which they can take with them everywhere they go.
I've started collecting loveys/blankets and have many in my store. Feel free to stop by and browse. If I don't have something you need feel free to ask.
