It is important to understand that your listing titles and descriptions provide the most important place for attracting customers to your auction. Generating plenty of relevant, search-friendly content in your ads, coupled with great titles, is critical to getting the best advantage afforded by eBay search engines so that your pages show up as most relevant in the searches.
TITLE: The listing title should include a minimum of 1-3 relevant, keywords or keyword phrases. Since I sell clothing, my keywords always include the Manufacturer name, fabric tyle (Linen, silk, Poly etc.), item type (maybe even several word options for the item type such as shirt, blouse and top if space allows), and tag size. Additionally, as space allows, I add item color and condition. Color and condition are less searched than type of item, fabric and manufacturer. Using a good formula for your headline and making it a habit to use it when you write your titles, is both great search engine optimization practice and will assure a steady flow of customers interested in what you are selling. Less guesswork -- a much more focussed approach.
AD COPY: Your ad should include at least 200 words of copy. The ad should have a complete description of the item for sale, including age and any and all faults.
Be sure to use those most important keywords and phrases at the beginning and at the end of the ad (including at least those mentioned in the title as discussed above).
An additional best practice is to include the frequent use of keywords in the copy as well as using attention getting formatting to include bold lettering, clear font type (Verdana and Arial are much easier to read than Times New Roman and you do want your ad top be read if at al possible). Don't forget to include the item size and/or dimentions. In clothing both tag size and dimensions are critical because clothing manufacturers size so differently that nothing is predictable by tag size alone. This is especially on important titles and keywords.
Hope this helps your customers find you more quickly and easily. Nothing will help more in boosting sales and gaining you lots of feedback, which in turn helps build your credibility as a seller and your business on eBay. As eBay grows, so does the work load for the search engines that guide potential customers to you. Making sure you optimise your sales to help is a wise investment of your time -- every time.
