When shopping Quicken software on eBay, it's helpful to know whether or not you're getting an OEM version.

What is OEM?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. When referring to software, it means that kind of software is bundled, must be purchased together with a new computer. When OEM software is sold by its own along, it's a breach to Manufacturer's license as well as eBay's policy.

Find eBay's policies on OEM software here (link - http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/oem.html).
Find Intuit Inc policies on OEM software here (link - http://cgi3.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=intuitcopyright).

What is the difference between OEM and Retail version, per Quicken software?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since OEM version is supposed to be installed on a New computer, user is not allowed to import data file (*.QIF).

What does OEM version matter to me?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you're an existing Quicken user, your data file (*.QIF) from previous version will not be read by the OEM version. So you lose the access to your historic finance data.

How do I know it is an OEM what I received?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's as simple as it is - a Retail Box.

When you receive the software in a factory sealed retail box, it is guaranteed to be a retail version. When you receive a CD, requiring a serial number to install, you've got an OEM.

How do I know it is an OEM before I bid?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Search for following keywords "CD", "Sleeve", "Retail", "Box" etc. When you see the listings state something like "Retail CD", "Sealed in CD Sleeve", "Factory Sealed CD", "NO Retail Box", "Unique Serial Number", be careful as you may be looking at the OEM version.

Some facts are - Retail version CD sleeve is never sealed, instead it is the box which is sealed; also retail version does not require a serial number to install, but OEM does.
