MTD Front Bumper (P/N: OEM-190-672)
For FastAttach(tm) Compatible 600 and 800 Series Tractors/For Box Frame Compatible 600 and 800 Series Tractors
The front bumper, manufactured by MTD, is designed to fit several names of lawn tractors by MTD (Troy-Bilt, Yardman, Huskee, etc) and can basically be installed one of three ways. The first way is to use the "FastAttach" system by using only Clevis Pins and Cotter Pins. The second way is to use the four bolts/nuts/lock washers on the 600 Series Box Frame Tractor. Finally, the third way is to use the four bolts/nuts/lockwashers on the 800 Series Box Frame Tractor.
If you are purchasing a front bumper from any provider on E-bay, please make ensure you get the hardware and the instructions. There is an MTD web site that provides the installation instructions for this part. I can't link it here, but you can search for MTD and manuals and come up with the site. If you still can't find it - give me a shout.
I installed the front bumper in about 45 minutes. You should realize that you may have to get creative when installing the bumper. I was concerned about lifting the hood on the tractor and hitting the bumper. Several bumper designs on the market may include a quick disconnect that will lower the bumper prior to raising the hood. This design does not have a quick disconnect. The first way to install is easy to remove, but can be considered a pain if you have to open the hood often.
My tractor was manufactured in March 2006, and the instructions did not clearly indicate what bolt holes I should use on the frame. I found two bolt holes on the frame, but there was a bolt (being used to keep the front axle yoke installed) in one of the holes. I removed the bolt and ensured alignment of the front bumper's holes and also the reinstallation of the bolt. After installing the hardware, I ensured that the hood of the tractor could be raised without hitting the front bumper.
I reused the original bolts (for the axle yoke - 2 each) and the provided bolts/nuts/lockwashers (lower mounting hole - 2 each) to install the bumper. The front bumper appears to be durable to take some of the force if I should hit something. It's a solid bumper that doesn't have the 2 1/2 or 5 MPH rated shock absorbing requirements like an automobile.
Overall, the color (black) is lacking for my equipment. I have an oyster grey (hood) and red (frame) on the tractor. The black bumper really doesn't match anything but the tires and steering wheel. However, as toys go - I may repaint the front bumper over the summer.
Ebay Shopping - I purchased mine at a reasonable price. I would suggest that you look for a front bumper via the part number and other searches. I have seen these sell for over $45.00 (plus shipping). I could easily go to my local hardware stores (Ace, Home Depot, Lowes, etc) and find the bumper a little cheaper. I personally don't get caught up in the bidding for an item - and I suggest that you don't either. A max bid (with shipping) shouldn't go over the normal price that you can find else where on the web. If you perform a few web searches you'll end up with varied prices, but at least you'll have an idea.
Overall, a nice accessory for my lawn tractor. When I get a chance, I'll up load some pictures. If you have any questions about installation - give me a shout. If you liked this guide - please rate it.
