OSTEOARTHRITIS

Over 16 million Americans suffer from osteoarthritis, which involves the deterioration of cartilage that covers the ends of bones. Osteoarthritis is commonly the result of aging, although injury or a defect in protein in the cartilage may also be the cause. It is rare for a person under the age of 40 to have osteoarthritis, which affects women three times as often as men.

Nutrient/Supplements                                                   Helpful Notes

  • Boron                                  A trace mineral needed for healthy bones, it also aides in the absorption of other minerals helpful to people with osteoarthritis.
  • Glucosamine                      Very important for the formation of bones, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage, all of which are affected by osteoarthritis. It works will in a combination supplement with chondroitin sulfate, hydrolyzed gelatin, and the herb boswellia.
  • Magnesium                         Magnesium helps balance calcium, which is beneficial to people with osteoarthritis. A good source of magnesium is a quality multi-vitamin and mineral supplement, especially one with calcium, zinc, and garlic.
  • Fatty Acids                         Extremely important for reducing the causes of inflammation in osteoarthritis and also increasing blood circulation. Fatty acids are found in omega fatty acids from fish oil, flax seed oil, and borage seed oil.
  • Zinc                                     Zinc is a mineral required for bone growth; very often people with osteoarthritis are not getting enough zinc in their diet.
  • Multi-Vitamin                    Contains vitamin E, vitamin C, zinc, copper, manganese and selenium, which all are helpful for osteoarthritis.
  • Garlic                                 Garlic has been shown to inhibit the formation of free radicals which can damage joints, a benefit to those with osteoarthritis.
