 Quilting Notions:
Tools or Toys?

Part 4 of 4
Thanks for sticking with me for all 4 parts!!

10. Iron and Ironing surface.

Yes, I said iron.  But where is the toy in an iron you ask?
Simple!  Who else do you know besides a seamstress that would have a seam generator iron and pay over $250.00 just to iron?

 Quilters!

That has to be one of the most expensive toys in my sewing room!
Why, because I could have gone to Wal-Mart and gotten a perfectly good iron for $29.95 and it would have done the same thing… tool or toy?
Same category as the sewing machines, both!

Ironing surface.
A household ironing board is a good start, we all have one of those.  There is a company that makes a large surface that fits over your ironing board, toy..

Maybe, it’s not necessary.

And if you don’t have an ironing board, a thick bath towel with an extra layer of smooth cotton fabric over it, will keep the heat from the iron from going through to your work surface and if you are concerned about the moisture, put a layer of foil down first.

Ok, with all that said about everything here, you should have a good head start on what you need to get quilting except the fabric and that is not considered a notion.

Buy the best quality fabric that YOU can afford.

If you have to start out with Wal-Mart fabric, so be it, we all have to start somewhere and I would rather it be on $2.99 not $9.99 fabric that I make my 1st mistakes on

(or should I say, creative decisions)

My son is still using a quilt that I made from Wal-Mart fabric 5 years ago and it is holding up just fine except the colors are starting to fade from all the washing.

Here are a few 'notions' that I didn't mention above.  Tools or Toys?  You decide.  Try them and if you use them, they are tools, if they gather dust... toys!

Flower Head Pins

Thimble

Bobbin Holder

Bobbins

Hand Sewing Needles

Spray Basting

Colored Pens

Multi Colored Safty Pins

and the list goes on and on . .

Hope this was helpful and entertaining at the same time.  Tell all your friends to take a read as well.  See you on the selling floor!!
