There is more to solder then 60/40. Not only are there different brands and different qualities of solder but there are also different mixes of solder. All solders follow the same formula, the first number being the tin content and the second number being the lead content. It is not a good idea to use plumbing solder, which can be purchased at hardware stores or home centers. This solder is designed to be used for plumbing and is not suitable for stained glass work.  Many solders have impurities and contain air pockets that later show up in the final product. PEWTER FINISH Lead-Free Wire Solder
 

This product is 100% safe for jewelry, skin contact and food receptacle applications. It has the penetration, solder ability and capillary action of 50/50 and maintains a beautiful pewter finish. DGS has a lower melting range, excellent flow characteristics, runs an excellent bead and is environmentally safe and easy to use.

            Keep in mind, a clean, well-lit and well-ventilated work area is recommended.  A temperature control unit for your iron is also recommended as well as a good quality flux and iron.
