Although the BH-200 is positioned at the lower end of Nokia's range of Bluetooth wireless earpieces it still is a good performer. I judge earpieces along five criterion:
1. Is it easy to use?
2. Can my caller hear me and can I hear my caller?
3. Is it comfortable?
4. Does the battery last a reasonable amount of time between charges?
5. Does it have something close to the 10 metre range it is supposed to have?
- (18/20) Easy to use is a two part issue. Is it easy to pair with a mobile device is the first part. This is as simple as it comes. Turn on the earpiece, have your device search for it, enter the 0000 passcode and you are done. Pairing gets 5/5. The second part is ease of use while connected. Here such things as volume adjustment, call cancelling, and initiation of voice dialing are of paramount importance. Adjusting the volume is simple. Cutting off a call is s ingle push of the large central fin-like button. Initiation of a voice dial was a bit tricky until I got the hang of it. So it gets 13/15 in this area.
- (8/10) Clarity of voice for both communicators is very important. This does quite well without noise cancellation or digital signal processing. Once it is positioned properly over the ear and pointed properly toward the mouth clarity is not an issue. Clarity becomes an issue when the distance between the earpiece and the mobile approaches 8 metres. Still, even at the 10 metre limit conversation is intelligible.
- (4/5) Comfort is subjective. I use the "did I forget I was wearing it?" test. I can not say I've forgotten I was wearing this eaprpiece. But it is good for several hours, a long train ride, or car trip.
- (4/5) This lasts a reasonable amount of time between visits to the AC or car charger. If I am careful to deactivate it when I am not wearing it I can go a whole work week without having to plug it up.
- (4/5) The range of this is every inch of 10 metres, if I may mix my units of measure. I can wear it around the house and walk into the garden without it losing connection. As mentioned above there is an increase in noise in the unit as the distance grows between the earpiece and the mobile. Conversation can still take place until connection is lost.
So, overall I rate this a 38/45 or about 3.5 stars. When you consider that this is sometimes bundled with a mobile by a wireless provider it becomes a very attractive earpiece. That it shares the mains charger with the bulk of current Nokia handsets makes it a natural for someone using a Nokia handset.
Style - I don't rate style but I do comment upon it. I prefer the stealth LED of this earpiece. It faces the wearer's ear. This is less ostentatious than many others that light up the night and the whole side of your face. The black and chrome is okay, the ear hooks might be a bit lighter in color, or at least exchangeable for something that more closely matches the user's skin tone. This is not an objectionable looking device, it just doesn't exude "coolness".
The BH-200 is perfectly serviceable and really has little to detract from it. I used mine every day until I got a BH-600 which I soon replaced with the BH-800. But that is another story.
