Problem Coins

In my eBay guide for collecting U.S. coins, I noted that in the long run, it seems wise to avoid problem coins.  For the reality of the matter is that, regardless of the price ("bargain" or not) the coin will always have a problem.  The coins illusrated below are examples of coins that, in my opinion, actually detract from a collection and will always be a headache when you try to sell them.  The 1909 S V.D.B. not only has the bent rim, but there is some scarring on the upper forelock that will look very strange if you try to remove it.  Next too it, the 1909-S was bent and then straightened.

Bent, straightened, it will fill a hole, but so will a piece of cardboard.  This one will sell to a buyer who is destined for frustration. The seller acknowledges that it looks as if it were attacked by Godzilla.  There are gouges, nicks, and all sorts of problems.

And here's one up for sale an 1877 Indian, a ture rarity that has a reserve of over $300.  Enticing, yes.  Long term value, ha!  Good Luck.

Below is a very nice 1911 D Unc cent, with a "carbon spot" above Liberty.  I know of no way that that spot can be removed and not look cleaned.  Thus, unfortunately, this problem will always be with the coin.
