UPDATE: NiteRider shut us down! They DO NOT permit sales of their product on eBay!  NiteRider does not allow sales on eBay and they will VOID your Warranty if they find out!  Call NiteRider at 1.800.466.8366 to verify this policy.

HOWEVER, we can still save you a bunch of money on these lights; We can email you a PayPal invoice (if you have a confirmed shipping address with PayPal).

UPDATE: The TriNewt Series has Been DISCONTINUED by the manufacturer.  The replacement lights are the Pro 600 and the Pro 1200.

Our resident mountain bike guru staff member felt compelled to include this review because of his experience with this light versus all the other lights he has tried (which is basically all of them).

To keep this short, sweet, and to the point we will put this review into a bullet format rather than a bunch of long winded subjective text that you have to wade and try to decipher.  Also, the conclusion of everyone here at PartsDiscounter that has tried this light is that it is the best product made for mountain bike lighting as of October 2008.

Moab / Flight HID vs Tri-Newt LED:
  • Beams
    • HID - Not well defined and inconsistent
    • LED - Sharp definition and always the same
  • Light Temp / Color
    • HID - Varies from light to light and changes during use based on temperature and when riding in rough conditions (annoying)
    • LED - Always the same
  • Light Output
    • HID - about 375 Lumens
    • LED - about 490 Lumens
  • Run Time
    • HID - 7.25-11.25 HR (Moab); 2.25-3.5 HR (Flight)
    • LED - 3.5-7 HR
  • Charge Time
    • HID - 4.5 HR (Moab); 1.5 HR (Flight)
    • LED - 4 HR
  • Weight
    • HID - 900 grams (Moab); 227 grams (Flight)
    • LED - 519 grams
  • Remote Handlebar Switch
    • HID - No
    • LED - Available With or Without (UPDATE 11/10/08: Sorry, NiteRider has DISCONTINUED the Wireless Remote Version!)
  • Reliability
    • HID - Finicky Bulbs, Finicky Ballasts - Not very reliable, MANY FAILURES
    • LED - LED's last and last and last, no ballast issues - NO FAILURES YET!
  • The Bottom Line
    • HID - BLOWS! Good stepping stone while LED technology was evolving but now it is outdated technology
    • LED - The future is here and it is only going to get better but we have no complaints with this light; I bought one MiNewt Mini-USB Plus for my helmet and one TriNewt for my bars... this setup throws more light than my truck puts on the road and I got TWO lights for less cost than one HID on my bars alonel!!

NEW IN THE BOX: NiteRider TriNewt LED Wireless Remote Lithium-Ion Light System!

Think of the TriNewt as the MiNewt’s big brother, with a look and design every bit as unique and striking as the MiNewt. The TriNewt incorporates a cluster of 3 high-powered LED’s to achieve a retina searing output of almost 500 lumens!

This is the regular version of the mighty Tri Newt because NiteRider has DISCONTINUED the WIRELESS REMOTE version! No ‘off the shelf’ optics are used in the TriNewt; Instead, the 3 high-powered LED’s are housed in a custom made reflector designed specifically with cycling in mind. The result is a beam pattern ideal for night riding. Like all NiteRider LED lighting systems, the TriNewt uses a Borofloat lens to greatly minimize light loss and maximize light output when compared to a traditional glass lens or total internal reflector. All of these features, combined with regulated run times ranging from 3.5 hrs – 7.0 hrs and a lightweight Li-Ion battery, make the TriNewt the new light by which all others will be judged.

SPECS:
  • 3 Light Settings: High / Low / Flash
  • Low Battery Indicator
  • 3.5 HR - 7.0 HR
  • Regulated Run Times
  • Borofloat Lens
  • Custom Reflector
  • 4.0 HR Smart Charger
  • 519 Grams
  • NOTE: TriNewt Wireless Remote version DISCONTINUED by NiteRider but the standard version shown here is still available!
