I had to by my camera equipment a piece at a time...I know yall know what I mean. I got the camera and a lens...then an upgrade lens...tripod..etc, etc. When I had finally had all I could stand form my D80's built-in flash I went flash shoppin. Since I am frugal (read poor) I looked at the third party stuff from various makers. The compatibility issues scared me a good bit. Then I started looking at the Speedlights. The SB-400 is small and would do for what most folks want a flash for, but of course, I wanted a bit more. The SB-800 is powerful, built like a tank and says "this guy is a photog 4 real". It, unfortunately is kinda on the expensive side sooo I checked out the SB-600. Not only is it nearly as powerful (check the guide #'s), built like a tank, and has many of the same features as an SB-800, it is much lighter and waaaay less complicated. AND...since I have the D80, I can use the built-in flash as a commander and trip the SB-600 remotely and wirelessly (kewl huh?). If you are in a similar delimma I urge you to read up on all these flashes...take them for an in-store test drive if you can, but don't turn your nose up on this jewel just because it isn't the "top of the line". This baby is the real deal and you don't have to take a college course to make it work. The SB-600 is a powerful quality flash that has the advanced amateur in mind. One of these days I will have me a f2.8 lens and an SB-800 and a Bogen /Manfrotto tripod set up and all that jazz. That said I feel like this purchase was a great one...it works wonderfully, serves me well 99.99% of the time and I saved me over $100 to spend on some good filters for my 18-200mm lens (the Nikon) and dinner for my very understanding and beautiful wife (she'll be reading this). You reeeeeeeally should check this flash out if you have a Nikon DSLR.
