I see several Nikon N-55 cameras go up for auction every week (for cheap I might add) on eBay because the "autofocus stopped working". Apparently Nikon got some bad electronics and they crapped out after they were distributed. Well, there is an easy and FREE fix for this problem. Go to the Nikon USA home page at nikonusa.com, hover on "service and support" and then select "service advisories". Look for the Nikon N55 advisory and click. A window will pop up, telling you what you have to do to send it back. Print and fill out the downloadable form. Be sure to follow the directions carefully and check out the FAQ section if necessary. Be sure to wrap the camera body in bubble wrap and pack it in a sturdy cardboard box. There is no need to send batteries, lens, or any other accessories. I did inadvertantly leave the batteries in, and used the body cap to keep any gunk out of the camera. Ship it insured, personally I suggest UPS. Once Nikon gets it it should take about 5 days to evaluate and repair it. They will send you a bill indicating that Nikon received it and it is a "no-charge order". You can even track the progress via the nikon website, instructions are on the paperwork you receive. It took Nikon 3 days to receive it (I shipped it on a Friday), they evaluated and repaired it by the following Firday, and the repaired camera was in my hands the following Monday. In fact, when I received the bill, I tracked the repair on the Nikon site and it indicated it was being shipped back to me! Nikon also provided a complimentary cleaning and maintenance check.
