Thomas Paine Thomas Paine , author of Common Sense, Common Sense , a book credited as helping to ignite the American Revolution, was an enigmatic figure, scorned in his time and yet so pivotal a part of American history (although he was eventually scorned by the Founding Fathers and relegated to relative obscurity over time and is still considered of lesser importance by a fair number of historicans)
Such diverse figures as Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Roosevelt have cited his words in speeches.
Many recent and upcoming books are taking a new look at his life, realizing that in many ways he was a visionary, a man ahead of his time and striving to reach the masses, the general public (which was considered a revolutionary and even dangerous move by many in government at the time).
For those interested in learning more about him, here are some suggested books, many of them brand new or forthcoming:
1. Common Sense: First published in 1776, this book has been republished many times and is fairly easy to obtain for very little expense. Read it and be amazed by views way ahead of their time: independence, equal rights for citizens and much more. It is an excellent starting point.
2. Thomas Paine/ Collected Writings:Common Sense/ The Crisis/...and more, edited by Eric Foner, 1995. Because this books is so hefty (over 900 pages), you may find it easiest to read a section at a time. None other than George Washington read his words to his soldiers (from Crisis #1) and this is a fine one volume collection of his most seminal writings.
3. Thomas Paine: Enlightenment, Revolution and the Birth of Modern Nations - Craig Nelson - 2006 - Hardcover - Viking Adult (publisher)
Although I've read many critiques and biographies of Paine, I felt this one did more to examine his life in its full complexity, bring to light his very deep flaws as well as his commtiment to his beliefs. The author approached his subject with a great deal of care and time, allowing up to 5 years for the book to see publicaton. As an added bonus, the writing style is lively and original. Even those who may be less interested in history could find themselves drawn into this one. For those who prefer their books in audio form, this one comes in that version as well.
4. Thomas Paine and the Promise of America - Harvey J. Kay - 2006 - Thomas Paine and the Promise of America The author reminds readers of the continuing effect and power of the author's words today. This one garnered a Starred Review in Publisher's Weekly and raves from Bill Moyers, Todd Gitlin and others. Take that for what its worth when deciding whether to buy this one. Browse through it, the table of contents and see what you think (Hint: There are sites for doing this before comparing prices and coming to Ebay for the best deal)
5. Citizen Tom Paine - by Howard FastHoward Fast - 1983 - paperback - Citizen Tom Paine Happily, this one is in paperback and can gernerally be found for bargain prices. Because I was fascinated by the complex portrait of this man, this is the book that goe me to look into others about Paine. Perhaps it is overstating the case but I think the author makes a case for considering him a hero of sorts, fiercely committed to his ideasl, forced to go jail and fear for his life....and yet he keep going.
