When starting out as a new buyer, there are a few things you should know and understand to make your transaction easy and successful.
1. Always read the whole item description, not all items for sale are new or for that matter as described in the title, you may see a brand name, but the item just looks like the brand item, which is not allowed on ebay, but happens quite often.
2. Always read the terms of service, when the item will be shipped, with what type of postage, if there is a separate handling charge, if they take returns, etc.
3. Before you bid understand the full cost of the item, always take into consideration the s& h charge, as that may make the item more expensive than retail. I suggest you find your item of choice, decide how much you are willing to pay including shipping and handling, then bid
***Example: cute t-shirt, starting bid $1.00 S&H $5.00, the amount I am willing to pay overall $12.00, so my highest bid would be $7.00.
4. Always check the sellers feedback reputation, this will give you an idea of how they handle transactions, even though they say they take returns, does not always mean they handle it politely. If they lack communication skills, or leave rude or other than factual feedback, it is best to steer clear, as this could be you on the receiving end of the attitude.
5. As a buyer, understand that not everything is shipped next day, and the type of postage, will cause your item to delay in it`s delivery, shipping times stated on the u.s.p.s. website are approximate, not exact. If you choose the least expensive shipping cost expect to wait awhile for the item. So if you are in a hurry choose the quickest ship charge or purchase retail. If the S&H says flat rate to all buyers, it is best to ask the seller how they ship, i.e. priority, parcel post, etc.
6. When in doubt, ask questions, most sellers answer questions quickly if they want to make a sale, and help the buyer to make a decision, if they don`t get back to you and you still are interested, know there terms of service, in case you need to return the item, otherwise pass on the auction. This way you will not be disappointed with the transaction. On the other hand if it is rare or discontinued and it is a great price, you may want to take the chance, especially for those last minute bids.
7. As a buyer be polite to your seller, if you have a problem with the item, communicate with the buyer in a professional manner, do not be demanding or rude or use name calling, this will not get you very far, and your transaction is now a dispute. These problems can be resolved, ***Remember buyers remorse is not a reason for returns to a lot of sellers, and they may not accept returns. If the item is not as described then you have a great reason to pursue a refund after you return the item.
8. Postal loss or damage happens, it is best to ask if the seller has delivery confirmation and insurance available, very important for the higher end products. If and item is lost or damaged a postal report will have to be filled out, communicate with you seller so the two of you can work on this together, if your seller is unwilling to help, you may have to work through ebay services to get the ball rolling. Know that a sellers responsibility does not end with mailing the package, but with you accepting it. In essence the post office is part of a sellers process to deliver, and it must be delivered as described.
9. If you do have to return an item always get delivery confirmation, and insurance, especially for higher priced items, in case of loss or damage due to postal handling, always package your item as it was sent, or better.
10. Be a responsible buyer and pay for your item in a timely manner, and if you have a problem and can not pay on time communicate with the seller, and work out the issue. Do not bid if you do not intend to pay, it is better to pass than to gain a reputation as a deadbeat bidder. Be prepared, have a paypal account before you start bidding so as not to delay payment. **** Never answer e-mail that asks for your password, is addressed to dear ebay member or dear paypal member. Only answer e-mail sent with your full name and ebay buyer name. If in doubt check your ebay e-mail, it will be there if it is legitimate. If you still doubt ask ebay directly,****
