New Buyers Beware on Ebay

If you have not purchased yet on Ebay here are a few helpful suggestions so you can buy safely and avoid unscrupulous sellers who may prey on new buyers naivity because all of these buyers are self regulated and with a million sellers there is some very bad sellers and you wish to avoid them.  If you have a 0 after your name, you are easy prey for unscrupulous sellers.  Be especially careful if you are looking for an item and you google it and press a link and end up on eBay. They call themselves stores, but for a few bucks a month anyone can have a store.  There are no background checks, no social security #, they don"t even have to be in this country and use a friends address. You can buy something and go to return it and they are no longer registered. There are counterfeit everything being sold. Items that will come broken that were broken prior to being sent. There is every scam imaginable. The minute you register for eBay you are opening yourself up to fraud, con men, anyone can contact you, your every bid can be followed, every item you previously bidded on can be looked at.  People in books are encouraged to follow you around and bid on your items.  Many people will be watching you.  There are computer programs that allow someone to out bid you out the last few seconds of the auction.  There are second chance items where you pay to a criminal and not a second chance--people will even try to use your name to defraud others. Ebays philosophy is look at the feedback, but it is time consuming to scroll down to find the negative feedback and 99.8 sounds good but if you look at the negatives as in my case--you see the seller is 2 sandwiches short of a picnic, but as someone who is new......you just want to bid and not familiar with strange people. Your mentality is based on legitimate retail stores and you can not foresee the duplicity. Then you can pay, but you will get a big yellow alert that the seller disputes payment.  Then you have to send a copy of the check and prove you paid or you get a check mark.  It is a rediculous process. You don't get your package, you have to dispute again and very difficult to prove.  The seller will insist he sent it, but you know you don't have it, but it doesn't matter.  My credit card took it off because they have so much trouble with Pay Pal that they don't like to even bother with them. Their advice to me was stay off of eBay and the person handling it had also been ripped off.  Ebay started off as a site for Pez collectors and they still rely on feedback.  The problem is people are not buying Pez dispensers and little recourse for buyers. There justification after the fact is you should have read the feedback and we are not responsible.  The bottom line is Buyer Beware and Buy at your own risk so think carefully before bidding and realize that eBay is risky and treat it cautiously and consider the minuses and protect yourself.  Don't give your password out, Don't get involved with a bidding war as there are shills and the item will come back a week or month later to bid on.  Don't fool yourself that this is a store and read the return policies, how and when they want payment.  Just realize there are a million people on eBay and there are a lot of rotten apples who can rip you off and get away with it unlike a retail store.
