In part one of my guide to new Asian Fountain Pens, I put a magnifying glass on three of my pens that are inexpensive daily writers (the Fuliwen F2010, Hero 330 and Wality 52) and recommended the entry-level pens from three other fountain pen brands (JinHao, Minka and Wenjue).
Here in part two, I would like to introduce you to seven pens that my research has led me to add to my wish list for future pen purchases. I am confident that you will be able to find these pens on eBay or perhaps in eBay stores.
Duke APEC 2001 Shanghai Limited Edition. This is the more accessible of two Duke APEC LEs; this one looks like acrylic or celluloid and features a gold nib, a black cap and a multi-colored cracked-ice barrel like some of the new Conway-Stewart pens. Apparently, the pens are numbered and come in a presentation box. When you click on the link for this pen, make sure you look in the eBay stores. Find this pen on eBay now!
Haolilai 227 (or "Royalty"). The 227 comes in an orange marbleized resin, features a gold nib, gold-tone trim and looks rather like an Italian pen. When you click on the link for this pen, make sure you look in the eBay store listings. Find this pen on eBay now!
Haolilai 803F (or "Imperial Family"). A gold and white marbleized pen that is "over the top" and not for the faint of heart. It looks to have a cubic zirconium in its cap tassie. Gold nib, lots of "bling." When you click on the link for this pen, make sure you look in the eBay stores. Find this pen on eBay now using "Imperial Family" as search term. Search using the brand and model number.
Hero 903 Set. This red set features a fountain pen and a roller ball; both are decorated in a tradtional Chinese gold floral pattern. The fountain pen has a gold nib and is over 5 1/2 inches long capped. Those who enjoy Asian art and antiques will appreciate the red 903 set. When you click on the link for this pen, make sure you look in the eBay stores. Find Hero 903 pens on eBay now!
King Crown K03. This is a Euro-style UBER pen. The K03 is decorated with navy stripes over white metal and is equipped with a large two-tone gold nib with an applied gold crown. Some of the King Crown pens remind me of Dunhill or Dupont pens; all of them look to be fabulous and well worth the inve$tment. Apparently King Crown pens are manufactured by the same pen company that produces the G. Crown, Duke and Uranus pens. When you click on the link for this pen, make sure you look in the eBay stores. S. Z. Leqi 929 or Naki "Tang." The 929 or "Tang" comes in solid black, marbleized blue or marbleized green. It has designs from a Tang Dynasty coin incorporated into its cap. This pen's nib has a bat on it (a sign of good luck) and comes in a beautiful box. There seem to be two versions of this pen; one has a single rectangular stone in the clip withh a two-tone14k nib and the other has four stones in the clip with a 23K plate nib. The plate nib is reported to feature a bat as well, but this is not yet confirmed. Truly an elegant pen with distinctive style; I prefer the black 929 version with the 14k nib. When you click on the link for this pen, make sure you look in the eBay store listings. Search for this pen using the word Tang as a search criteria on eBay now! Search for this pen on eBay now with the brand name Leqi. Look for this pen on eBay using the brand name Naki.
Wality/Airmail 77. The Wality 77 (the company's products are also marketed under the name Airmail) sports a steel semi-hooded nib and looks somewhat like a Parker 45. Available in black, blue or burgundy, this pen is crowned with a white metal filigree cap and enhanced with triangular ink view windows in the barrel. It is sometimes available at bargain prices; I may buy several for gifts! When you click on the link for this pen, make sure you look in the eBay store listings. Find this pen on eBay now!
These seven pens are at the top of my want list, based on two years of research, my personal taste and apparent bang for the buck. I am of the opinion that all of these could be purchased on eBay for under $130 (including shipping) with exception of the S.Z. Leqi 929 /Naki "Tang" and the King Crown K03. The K03 is still a good buy at hammer prices of $150 to $300; in fact, all of the King Crown pens are worthy of your serious consideration.
I have not written with any of these pens yet, but I hope to in the near future!
Happy hunting and thanks!
