A traditional tote, such as those marketed for knitters, is usually not suitable for needlepoint. It opens at the top and requires either digging through the bag or removing everything. My preference is for a bag the folds or opens wide, like a book, so that I can have all of my yarns and needles visible and at hand.
But you can organize your materials using a tote or organizer designed for another purpose. Some of the most adaptable, in size and design, are the YAZZII line of totes, cases, and needle and floss holders They are sold on Ebay and www.Yazzii.com.
There are nice items made by STITCHBOW (www.dmc-usa.com) Some of the designs are offered on the HSN shopping channel (www.HSN.com), on Ebay, and through many retailers, such as Joann. (www.Joann.com) and especially Herrschners, which has great product photos, very useful whether you buy from them or elsewhere (www.herrschners.com). The Stitchbow Travel Bag and Mini Travel Bag are very handy, with clear plastic pockets and even a three-ring assembly, for carrying patterns, pictures and other paper items.
Using a folding/hanging travel organizer is a great idea. Many of the cosmetic or accessory travel carriers are just the right size for floss, accessories and some canvases. They fold, usually in three sections, have pockets of various sizes, and they are soft and packable. You will find a nice selection with a Google search.
Some jewelry organizers are also very good for needlepoint supplies. In particular, check out the PREZERVE items. The Jewelry Portfolio With Travel Pouch has clear pockets of several sizes, opens flat, and accommodates removable pocket pages for extra storage. It is soft sided but semi-sturdy. Although Prezerve has a website, the products are only sold through the QVC channel, (www.QVC.com) or as overstocks on Ebay.
