Needlepoint is a much loved form or art. As a stitcher myself I know the hard work that goes into each and every project. This guide is to give you ideas and inform you of things available on the market today to help you become a better stitcher. Along with fiber choices and ideas to enhance and embellish your project
Giving your project as a gift? Many stitchers make holiday ornaments for gifts, consider making an ornament of something the recipient really loves for old movie and tv buffs try stitching a charachter or for the young at heart try stitching Alice in Wonderland or Peter Pan. For a policemen or firemen try stitching an ornament of a police men or firemen.
If you are working on a piece for a child consider doing one of the popular charachters and finishing as a stand up, door hanger, piece to be mounted on the back of a jacket, or stuffed animal type, or pillow.
If you are a quilter also try using smaller pieces in the 5 X 7 range and adding the finished piece to your quilt as a panel. Box tops, serving/dresser trays, photo album covers are all very unique beautiful gifts. Weddings, Baby Showers, Welcoming of a New Baby or any special event needs photo's. Choose from our enormous collection and in the 5 X 7 range or larger stitch a photo album cover that is sure to be treasured for years to come and will be a very unique gift! Or a box top to be used as a photo box.
Canvas Embellishment: It's important to remember when stitching that not all materials are moth proof!!! All Silk threads and some wool threads are factory treated to be moth proof, a treasure that you make to last a generation to be turned into an heirloom needs top quality fibers while cotton is beautiful if your piece is not going under glass consider using silk or a treated fiber to ensure that your piece will be preserved forever.
There are so many beautiful fibers available today, don't be afraid to experiment for years I only stitched with Perle cotton and now I very rarely use any cotton. As a rule of thumb with any project that you do, enhance what is there, make it look realistic. Don't be afraid to experiment with stitches break away from basketweave and continental. There are so many books on the market today that are easy to follow with clear illustrations that will help you become a phenomenal stitcher!
If you are stitching a piece that has a lady with a feather boa try using Charleston a thread that will enhance the boa to look like a boa. When stitching clothing, try using velour/velvet for a jacket or skirt or some wool for a sweater that is in your piece. Don't be afraid to mix fibers together you never know what combination you can come up with! For flowers use silks and remember over dyed threads are great for back rounds, water, skies, moons etc. Before stitching an area think of what it looks like in the real world when you look at the ocean you never see only one color, over dyes are great for this area, when you look at the moon it shines, try either silk or even metallic to enhance it. Same goes for the sun.
