Nancy Ann Abbott originally designed and made dresses for small dolls. The first Storybook dolls were made on an imported Bisque body from Japan. These were fancy dressed with a gold foil sticker attached, "Nancy Ann dressed dolls". These originally sold for as little as $0.50, to a high of $1.50. It was a cottage industry with as few as four workers in 1937. She later made her own bisque dolls and dressed them in quanities of 100,000 or more a day. There are about 500 or more listed on eBay at any given time. The highest for a single doll sold on eBay was over $14,000.
These were always more of a collector's piece. As most original owners age and sell them, or pass them on to descendents they are usually in good shape. They were not bought to actually be played with. They were, "Wee dolls for wee collectors". A girl who was six when she got her 1st doll in 1937 would be 76 years old now.. Even the last year that bisque dolls were made, would put a person at least 60 now. Now, they wind up in estate sales, auctions, etc.; so their value drops with each generation. The eBay sales this past year does indicate this trend. Very rare dolls still hold their Value. Some of the noted collectors are now thinning out their collection on eBay. I hope this was helpful.
