There appears to be the need today to make contact with ways of living that remain close to the universal natural order. We are aware of these multi-layered structures of reality, and artists like Seena Donneson are attempting to communicate, with abstract imagery, the sense of wholeness which permeates all existence, as well as the connections which link the past, present, and future. Although the sculptures are originally created with handmade paper, their fragility is defied in bronze. Her body of work, cast by Modern Art Foundry, ranges from images fashioned into unique jewelry and tabletop pieces, to large relief sculptures. On gallery walls, they assume a presence that echo the visual power of the cave drawings at Lascaux and the ancient reliefs in Egypt and Mesopotamia, and the primitive artifacts found in African tribal areas.
The theme running through her work has to do with "fragments lost in time", reflecting various natural phenomenon. Although non-representational, the symbolism in these pieces refers to the decay as well as the rebirth taking place in our fast changing high-tech society. They also deal with survival. Instead of re-echoing the geometric forms of our architecture, they can provide a reminder of our human history. Donneson is showing us symbols for these tangible and sometimes murky associations with the ancient past and distant future. The thread which connects each of us to the long tapestry tracing the way back to the beginning of civilized thought, is conceptualized in her work, which whispers softly but clearly, in an often very loud and discordant world.
Seena was educated at Pratt Institute, Pratt Graphic Arts Center and the Arts Student League, all renowned institutions located in New York City, where she has called home for many years. She often credits the inspiration for her work to have come from her many visits as a child to the great art museums, and all the images that were evoked...
Seena recently became a member of the National Arts Club and the New England Sculpture Association.
