A game and watch is a handheld video game created mostly during the 1980's.
2. Who made Game & Watches?
A guy named Gunpei Yokoi was the creater of the handheld games, and he worked for Nintendo.co.ltd.
3. How many Game & Watch games were made?
A total of 60 different games were created. Only 59 of them were released to the public. The special game Super Mario Bros. (In a Famicom case) was given out only as a prize to the winners of the Famicom F1 Race tournament in Japan. Only 10,000 ever produced!
4. Is Nintendo the only company who distributed these games?
No, Nintendo contracted with other companies to distribute these games. They were first produced in the United States under the name Time Out by Mego Corp. Until Nintendo started to transform those 4 games (Toss Up, Fireman Fireman, Flag Man, Exterminator) into a series called Game & Watch. There were roughly about 7 major companies. CGL who distributed in the UK. Ji21 in France, VideoPoche in Europe, Futureronics in Australia, Tric-O-Tronic in Germany, Pocketsize in Canada.
5. How many different style games were created?
A total of 11 different style games were created. Each game is classified by a certain series. We have Silver, Gold, Widescreen, New Widescreen, Multi-Screen, Tabletop, Panorama, Super Color, Micro Vs. System, Crystal Screen, and the Special Super Mario Bros.
6. What are the PocketSize games?
Pocketsize games were handheld Game & Watches released in Canada. The distributer in Canada created very unique boxes of most of the handheld games. Instead of a dull box, each box contained a graphic cartoon of the game. The nice illustration of these boxes has caused a high demand from collectors. Prepare to pay alot of money for these type of boxed games.
7. Why do some games come in a white box?
It is beleived that Nintendo sent display models to shops in white OEM (original equipment manufacturer) boxes. Only known models are Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong 2, and BlackJack
8. Why do some boxes have a number stamped on the inside flap?
If a box has a number stamped on the flap, this means the box is a first edition release.
9. Why are the Mego. Corp Time Out Handheld games similiar to Game & Watches?
Before Nintendo started to release the Game & Watch series they signed a contract with the company Mego to distribute the games under the toy name Time Out. The company Nintendo is printed on all of the games. Only 4 games were produced until they decided to create the Game & Watch series that very same year in 1980. All four games were recreated duplicates into the G&W series which are the Silver series. Games include: Toss Up (Ball), Flag Man (Flagman), Exterminator (Vermin), and Fireman Fireman (Fire)
10. What other official companies produced games for Nintendo (Game & Watch)?
A company named Coleco did produce Nintendo's hit arcade game Donkey Kong Junior on a TableTop verison. The exact same game is on the Donkey Kong Junior version Tabletop. Many of these games are the same gameplay, but are on different types of handhelds. (Panorama, WideScreen, Tabletop). Also, In 1997 Stadlbauer has created mini playable keychain games replicating the Game & Watches.
*Nintendo has re-created many of the famouse Game & Watch games on several GameBoy Games. Including Game & Watch Gallery, 1, 2, 3, and 4.
