The Two Dollar Gold coins of Newfoundland were minted between 1865-1888, These coins are breathtakingly beautiful ,scarce , and yet ,when compared to u.s gold of roughly the same time, very affordable .Originally , Newfoundland was considering a one dollar gold coin, but, it was decided , that this coin would easily be lost due to small size ( a similar problem was encountered in the U.S. with our early one dollar gold coinage )so, a two dollar denomination was adopted.  The designer of this  coin had a very unique way of expressing its value ( on the reverse ) in three different ways 100 pence, ( the british sterling equialent value of this coin ) "2 dollars" and finally "200 cents " . as far as i know, this is the only coin that features this. Prior to Canada's confederation in 1867, newfoundland was the only british colony with its own gold  coinage . 1865 was the first year of this lovely coin, the mintage was 10,000 ,of the eight different dates of this issue , four had mintages of 10,000, which, except for the 1888 , which had 25,000 , this  was the highest mintage !!!!!!!! even if all 10,000 still exist ( which i doubt very seriously ) these are super -low mintage coins !!!! Consider the ultra rare 1880 coin with a mintage of mere 2,500  pieces !!!!!!! the low trend in fine-12 is 1,500 !!!!! ( and i believe that to be a steal at that price !!!!)The trends on the other dates range from 175.00-250.00 in fine , ( if you could find  any ) more often than not , these coins are in au-unc. The 1872 had a mintage of just 6,000 pieces yet in fine its trend is only about 50.00-100.00 higher !!!!! what a steal. Clearly, this series is  terribly under-valued and underrated , as i believe these coins to be worth far more. In closing, i want to share a recent , fond experience, a local coin-dealer friend of mine ,had, all ten newfoundland ( there are two each of the 1870, and the 1888 ) gold coins in a custom lucite holder, all at least ms-63, he said" hey Dan, what do you think of these " ........ what do i think of those ????..............this honestly brought a tear to my eye , seeing all of these pretty coins offered together.......anybody want to guess the price tag???? "only" $ 25,000 u.s , a little out of my price range.( Indeed a bargan, the 1870 alone , is worth nearly $10,000 )The next week, i saw my coin -dealer friend again, and he mentioned a gentleman had just purchased  the gold set the day before..........some guys have all the luck !!!!! maybe someday..............  THANK YOU ______DANNY ANABLE , __________ " THE CANADA COIN NUT " AUGUST, 2006
