There is a new scam that is hitting unsuspecting eBay users like myself. I am talking from experience and want to warn you of an email scam I was subjected to just this past weekend! I have included detailed photo's for you to see what EXACTLY to watch out for! Make sure you alert all your friends, family, and aquaintences since this scam is hitting eBay sellers. Pass this guide on to anyone you know who uses eBay, especially those who SELL because this targets eBay sellers!
What happens is that you receive an email that looks like it is from eBay. If you are a frequent seller then you know that when you have an item for sale or being auctioned, another user with questions regarding your item can send an email to you using the "Ask Buyer a Question" button found on your item's auction page. Well, eBay then will send an question to you where you are given the chance to respond. There is even a link on the email that takes you straight to your eBay account for easier access.
Well, when I received an email over the weekend from eBay with a question from another member about one of my auction items, I noticed that my email host (thunderbird) had a warning saying they think that email is a scam. I never had that message before so I then looked more closely at the message. If you look at the first picture below, I have circled the exact thing I see when I open up my email account. I have circled, in RED, the all the things that sent off the RED FLAGS letting me know this was, indeed, a SCAM!(This picture is supposed to be MUCH larger. Try clicking on it to see it full size.)
First, you will see that my email provider flagged the message as a potential scam. Next, at the top of the page, you see that there is an eBay user name circled that is not mine, nor the user name of the person this message was sent from. So we have three different eBay user names in this one message. Not right.
Then, look at where I circled the eBay's user information...... notice that the location says: NY! United States. eBay does not allow
punctuation marks in the States field so this tells you something is not right.
Then I circled the "RESPOND NOW." In real eBay messages you will have this, but as you will see in the next picture, it takes you to what "appears" to be eBay's website for you to log in to your eBay account, but again, I have circled more RED FLAGS showing you what to look for to know that this is not really eBay!!!! Any person logging into their eBay account via this SCAM email will be sending their eBay USER NAME & PASSWORD to this SCAM ARTIST who now has ACCESS TO YOUR ACCOUNT!
Look at the next picture to see what I am talking about.

The first thing that drew my attention is that normally when I log into eBay, my fonts are much larger and there is less wasted space. Next, look at the first circled item: The web address takes you to h t t p://orsi.ouc.edu.n etc.... this is NOT eBay's WEB ADDRESS!!!
The bottom circle again confirms this.
So, if you receive any emails from eBay, please be aware of these warning signs that alert you to a potential SCAM! This
is detrimental for your safety and protection. If you do come across a SCAM, then immediately ALERT eBay!!!!
Here is a link for eBay's security center where you can report this problem. Please make sure you do REPORT anything
that looks suspicious.... your help and the help of others will help eBay to eliminate or reduce these kinds of targeting scams.
I hope this information helps you prevent a potential threat to your eBay account!
Cordially,
TheMrs44012
