Topaz gems have a long history of being precious and important gemstones. Blue Topaz, Yellow Topaz and White Topaz are popular stones that have been used in jewelry throughout the ages. The stones are hard with a ranking of 8 on the Mohs scale, have a high refractive index, and are not sensitive to chemicals. This makes them highly suitable for many jewelry applications.
A relatively new high tech process has been applied to White Topaz stones creating a new stone called Mystic Topaz. First, the colorless Topaz stone is cut and polished. (Other colorless stones are sometimes used as well such as quartz and cubic zirconia.) It is then given a thin coating of titanium oxide which acts as a coloring agent. There are different variations that are used to produce different colors. The stone is then heat treated to improve the color and appearance of the stone. The result changes a plain colorless stone into an eye catching stunning stone that has all the colors of the rainbow. The treatment is durable and with care should last the lifetime of the stone.
Mystic topaz is a very affordable stone and is popular as a fashion accessory. The array of colors it displays makes it unique and delightfully different.
To care for your stone treat it as you would an opal or pearl. You can clean it with mild soap and water and dry it with a soft cloth. You can also clean your stone with Windex.
